The percentage mistakes worth avoiding
Percentages trip people up in two predictable ways. The first is assuming a rise and a fall of the same percentage cancel out — they don't. A £100 item reduced by 20% becomes £80, but adding 20% back to £80 only reaches £96, because the second percentage is taken from a smaller number.
The second is confusing "per cent" with "percentage points". If an interest rate goes from 4% to 6%, that's a rise of two percentage points, but a 50% increase in the rate itself — both are correct, and which one a headline picks can change the whole impression. And when you need to reverse a percentage, divide rather than subtract: to strip 20% tax off a gross price you divide by 1.2, not take 20% away.
