Elapsed time, and why the seconds keep moving
Time-since works the opposite way to a countdown: instead of measuring down to a future moment, it measures up from a past one, and because "now" never stops advancing, the figure climbs by a second every second.
Two ways of expressing the gap are both useful. The broken-down version — so many years, months and days — matches how we naturally talk about anniversaries. The total version — the whole span in days, or hours, or seconds — is the one that surprises people, since a single ordinary lifetime runs to billions of seconds. Add a time as well as a date and the count is exact from that moment; leave the time blank and it counts from midnight.

What is the difference between Time Since and the Days Counter? ▼
The Days Counter calculates between two specific dates you choose. Time Since is focused on how long has elapsed from a past event up to right now, and updates live every second to reflect the current moment. If you want to count down to a future date instead, use the Countdown Timer.
Can I share a Time Since link? ▼
Yes — use the Share button to generate a link with your date pre-filled. Anyone who opens the link will see the same elapsed time, continuously updating from the original event date.
How many hours has it been since a certain time? ▼
To work out how many hours it has been since a specific time — for example since 5pm yesterday or 8pm last night — enter that date and time above and read the "Total Hours" box. It counts the exact hours (and minutes and seconds) that have passed right up to this moment, updating live.
How long has it been since a particular year? ▼
Enter the 1st of January of that year (e.g. 01/01/1983) to see how long it has been since that year — in years, months, days, and even total hours and seconds. Great for working out how many years have passed since a birth year, a wedding, or a memorable event.
